FALL 2011 ISSUE:

LET's GO FISHING
Let’s Go Fishing was created to enrich the lives of people age 55 and older through free fishing and boating excursions that strengthen communities, build relationships and create memories. Fishing and boating is such a common past-time for Minnesotans and we may often take for granted how easy it is for many of us to enjoy our state’s beautiful lakes and rivers. LGF returns the outdoor experience to those whom might not otherwise have the opportunity to fish, boat or enjoy time with friends on the water. Since our inception in 2002, we have served over 50,000 seniors, youth, veterans and disabled adults. Today 27 LGF chapters exist throughout Minnesota. Read more...

SUMMER 2011 ISSUE:

PERSPECTIVES: THE MANY FACES AND VOICES OF RELAY
Cancer touches all of us, in one way or another. Some of us have found ourselves on the periphery of such an ordeal, in which we may find ourselves feeling empathy and compassion for those afflicted, and a need to reach out to support those who are stuck reeling in the epicenter. Maybe you have provided a shoulder for your neighbor to lean on when his wife fell ill. Or you have made a casserole to keep a co-worker’s stomach full while they were dealing with a relative’s radiation treatments. Read more...

OUR JOURNEY TO BASS BAY LODGE
Our journey to find the perfect lakeshore property… it was years of looking at hundreds of properties, happiness, sadness, disappointment and excitement. It began back in 1997 when we purchased a mobile home on rented land at a Cass Lake resort. This was an affordable way for us to have a place “up north” – somewhere to get away from the Twin Cities and enjoy fishing, boating and summer afternoons at Star Island. We have so many great memories of our time there, meeting some great people and making life-long friends. Read more...

MUSKIES - MOVIN AND GROOVIN
This past summer I had the opportunity to fish and film a television episode with Douge Stange, Editor in Chief and television host for In-Fisherman, a show and fishing idol I have watched since I was a teen. Our goal was to target muskies on Minnesota waters. Minnesota has the best musky fishing anywhere right now and right in the heart of Central and Northern Minnesota. So off we went, camera man, a couple of crazy musky fisherman, a boat full of lures, with a couple of motivated attitudes. I have to admit I was a little nervous as this was a great opportunity but lets face it, we’re fishing for one of the toughest and most challenging fish that swim in freshwater. Read more...

REMODELING WITH SPITZACK BUILDERS
Remodeling lake homes and cabins is a growing trend in the construction business. Many lake homes do not meet today’s wants and needs but can be updated without demolishing the existing home and starting over. This home is a prime example. It was a nice enough cabin, but did not have the amenities the owners were looking for as a home and it was too valuable to just tear down. The main objectives were to attach the cabin to the existing garage, remodel two bedrooms to create a master suite, create a pleasing covered entry with perhaps timbers and stone....Read more...

UPDATING YOUR HOME WITH TODAY's FLOORING TRENDS
Despite today’s economic climate being the topic in most households, today we in the flooring industry are seeing definite growth from the last two years alone. We have mainly seen a big boost in remodels, especially in kitchens and bathrooms such as granite countertops, tile showers, stone and hardwood floors. Not only does this update and revitalize the look of your home but it also adds value and increases the likelihood of resale. Read more...

Trends in Northern MN Landscapes
As a Landscaper in Northern MN for the past 20 years I have grown with the industry and experienced various trends. I have gained a considerable amount of knowledge in where the industry is headed and of course where it has been. As with other types of home construction it has gone through various cycles especially in the type of products used and design layout. I have noticed that today’s focus has been strong towards the natural stone look. I believe every home owner, especially new construction homes, have a desire to install a landscape that is “Timeless” so to speak. In other words, our goal is to install a landscape that ages well with the upcoming... Read more...

A Variety of Hearth Products
Fireplaces and freestanding stoves not only make a home more inviting and livable, but they also play a key role in selling them. Many home buyers agree, with 22 percent saying an existing fireplace or stove played a significant role in their choice to buy a specific home. This trend coincides with National Association of Builders (NAHB) data that reports a fireplace is one of the top three items people look for when buying a home. This comes as no surprise to the staff at Wilkening Fireplace Company who have been manufacturing and selling all types of quality fireplaces, stoves and inserts for close to 40 years! Read more...

IS REAL ESTATE A PART OF YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN?
The stock market has comeback in the past few years and many people have seen incredible gains. The question for many is “What to do next”? Well, if that is you, listen up! Real estate values are down, and if we all know one rule of investing its buy low, sell high. It seems so simple, but yet it is true. Look around! You will find many great buys on real estate. Land prices are lower than they have been in 10 years and homes can be bought for less than replacement cost! If you would like to purchase an asset that you can see rather than a stock, now is the time to consider turning some of your retirement account into a real estate IRA, SEP, or 401k... Read more...

BEMIDJI MN FAMILY LEAVES FOR HAITI
Something happened on January 12, 2010 that would change our families’ life forever; a high magnitude earthquake struck the nation of Haiti near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Within days after the earthquake, plans were being made for a team mostly made up of Oak Hills Christian College students to go to Haiti over spring break with plans to help in whatever way they could. My wife Amanda and I were on that team. Read more...

GET READY FISHING OPENER 2011 - BONANZA SPRING WALLEYES
Spring is upon us and the once frozen lakes are now shining with soft water ready for you to hop in the boat, put a line in the water, and set the hook! In the last installment of “My Lake Guide”, I spoke on winter walleyes on Leech Lake. Winter is a great time to get out and enjoy a day on the ice but now its time to get in the boat and put some fish in the net. Lets face it, if you are not fishing where the fish are, you can’t catch them. That is why it’s important to understand annual movements of
the fish you tend to target. In this case, we are talking the old marble eye. Read more...

mn lakes aquatic invasive species - Awareness Is The 1st Step In Prevention.
The threat of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) to our area lakes has never been greater. At a disturbing rate, the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species has now reached 35% of Minnesota’s recreational lakes. To many lakeshore property owners, this topic is alarming but not quite alarming enough to take action. Many folks are of the opinion that “it won’t happen to our lake” or “it’s only a matter of time, so what’s the use in trying to stop it”. The fact is, Aquatic Invasive Species are spreading. Once in a lake, it has hugely devastating impact not only on the ecosystem, but the property values of lakeshore. Read more...

geocaching
Geocaching is a treasure hunt! It’s an outdoor activity that combines hiking and exploring using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate either virtual or actual treasure caches. Hidden treasure chests lie unprotected waiting to be found by the few who know they exist. One might be in a hollowed out log, another magnetically attached to the underside of a downtown bench. The trinkets within aren’t anything extraordinary, because the real treasure is the hunt itself. “After my first find, I was hooked” said Walter Secore, who has been Geocaching for six years. The Paul Bunyan Trail is the longest bike trail in Minnesota at 110-miles and it connects the Heartland Trail, the Blue Ox Trail and the Cuyuna State Trail. The portion of the trail from Guthrie south through Laporte toward Walker is now paved. With the paving of this 19 mile segment, newly completed in 2010, the Paul Bunyan Trail now yields a continuously paved trail from Brainerd, MN to Lake Bemidji State Park in Bemidji, Minnesota - a total of 110 paved miles! today's mortgage news from tim oster
The process of buying or refinancing a second home is not much different from buying or refinancing your primary home, however there are a few things you will want to consider. One of the most important decsions that could add affect the type of loan you are eligible for and whether or not you can deduct certain expenses of the home for tax purposes is how you plan to use the home.
