The Walker Area Community Center is a community achievement, reflecting the active and vibrant spirit of area residents who are dedicated to making the Leech Lake area an exciting place to live year-round. The WACC was designed for a fun, healthy, and supportive environment for people of all ages; one which will enrich their quality of life by fostering a broad range of opportunities. Our goals are to provide civic, cultural, educational, recreational and leisure activities.
The center is a 52,000 square-foot, multi-use facility that contains an ice rink four months out of the year, a fitness gym, locker rooms with showers, basketball/ volleyball court, a walking track, large and small meeting rooms, concessions stand and a commercial kitchen. The ice rink is used for hockey, ice skating and curling from November through mid-March. During the ice-out months, the arena hosts various shows and events including a Home and Garden Show in April, community garage sales in June, wedding receptions, family reunions and more.
The Fitness Center and Gymnasium has a complete line of cardiovascular, free-weights, assisted lifting machines, treadmills, a stairclimber, elliptical machines and stationary exercise bicycles. The gymnasium’s basketball court is also used for volleyball, tennis, pickleball, dodgeball and aerobics classes. Showers and locker rooms are provided for both men and women. A day pass to use the fitness center, gym, lockers and walking track is only $5. Monthly memberships are available, as well as six to 12 month memberships.
The Walker Rotary International Club meets every Tuesday at noon in the Rotary Room. At other times, the Rotary Room is available for rental for parties, meetings and any other function. It comfortably seats 150 and is located directly next to the kitchen. The Ringle library features a fireplace, flat screen TV and conference seating for up to 20 people. Either room makes an elegant environment for seminars, meetings or private parties, and is available for rent by the day. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the center as well.
The WACC is also home of Walker Youth Hockey, Walker Curling Club, Just For Kix, Tae Kwon Do and the Leech Lake Boys and Girls Club. Four signature fundraising events take place each year that help support the WACC: The Polar Pout Plunge (during the Eelpout Festival), The WACC Golf Classic, The Chase the Police Triathlon and the Walker North Country Marathon. See below for more information on each event.
All areas of the community center can be rented for private parties and functions, such as weddings, birthday parties, exhibits and shows, and corporate meetings and retreats. For a full list of membership plans and rates, stop by the WACC, located up the hill on Second St. in Walker, then left on Tower Ave; call (218) 547-1853; or visit the website at www.walkerwacc.com.
